In 1989 Louisiana & Delta operated its first “cane train” as a demonstration to show that moving sugar cane by rail could, once again, been done safely, efficiently, profitably, and with good service. Although it has taken almost 10 years to accomplish, the idea is slowly becoming reality. The first season (1997) we moved 32,000 tons and lost money doing it. In 1998-99 we moved 124,000 tons of cane at a good profit. 1999 is anticipated to be a year that we handle 350,000 tons. If things go as planned, by the year 2003 we will be moving 2 million tons of sugar cane every fall.
