Saudi Arabia
In mid summer of 1983 we had the opportunity to interview with USDOT for a position as an advisor to the Saudi Railways Organization (SRO). My contract would be a minimum of two years (we ended up staying three) with USDOT and we would be working with SRO in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. By September of 1983 we were attending classes in Washington DC where we learned a little about Saudi, living and working there. We were on the ground in Saudi, working and living there, by late September 1983.
The position I was filling had been was originally held by Tom Evans, a "track man" out of the FRA. Tom had completed his work and tour so it was time for him to come "home."
My work was focused in the mechanical operations of SRO, especially advising them in the design and initial construction of a new major locomotive shop.
The story of our life in Saudi depicted in the pictures in this Gallery is an attempt to allow the viewer to see some of the "normal" life we had as US citizens in Saudi.
Travel was a part of that experience. We were able to make trips or travel to/from many locations in Europe, as well as we went on a camera "safari" in Kenya, spent time in India and made several in-country Saudi trips. Pictures taken during those trips will be found either in this Gallery or others which are/will be available for viewing.
Our tour of three years ended in late 1986 and we returned to the USA to continue my career in railroading.
